More Rogan Posh that Rogan Josh, Cinnamon Garden is a contemporary India restaurant serving modern Indian food in a beautifully decorated dining room.
One of the new wave of stylish Indian establishments, Aashim Bajaj’s elegant eatery has been packing them in in Ashbourne. The menu features bold and distinct flavors that showcase the unique blend of cuisines found throughout India. They use locally grown seasonal produce and herbs to prepare all the sauces, spice blends, and desserts daily.
The menu is shorter than in some of the more traditional restaurants, but you will find variations of all your favourite dishes given a modern twist. There are so many great things on the menu here, it is difficult to know where to start, but three starters that really stand out are the cinnamon lamb stir fry, the spinach and cheese Samosas and the lamb chapali kebab with pineapple chutney. The is also an excellent tandoori chicken and the mixed platter features an onion bhaji, tandoori chicken, lamb kebab and an excellent piece of mint fish.
Main courses and side dishes continue the high standard, and the Goan fish curry is a highlight, as is the slow roasted lamb shank with Kashmir chilli and the Chicken tak a tak. Each main course has a recommended side order that compliments the dish, and we have tried their Channa masala - chickpeas with tamarind and coriander - and Jeera Aloo - thinly sliced potato with cumin and coriander lime drizzling.
The naan breads are excellent, and desserts are a step above what you will find in most Indian restaurants, the chocolate mousse being especially good.
Cinnamon Garden is a restaurant that is striving to be the best. Aside from Rasam and Ananda, I really haven’t tasted Indian food any better elsewhere in Ireland. This coupled with really good service makes this one of the finds of the year. It’s funny really, but Ashbourne boasts two of the best ethnic restaurants in the country, our favourite Chinese, Eatzen and now The Cinnamon Garden. Well worth a trip.
