Review

Juju Since 1989 the Johnstown Inn has built a reputation for providing expertly cooked, homemade food. The menu encompasses both the contemporary and traditional and many of the dishes have reached legendary status amongst the local clientele for their consistency - for instance the homemade vegetable soup has been made to the same exact recipe since the day they opened.

The Johnstown Inn has also built a reputation for it's great range of drinks and currently stocks the widest range of imported beers in the Kildare area. The wine list offers customers a chance to sample some of the great varietals and represents great value, especially as they offer the entire list by the glass.

The recently opened Juju steakhouse has kept it’s eye firmly on the ball when maintaining the level of quality food on offer. They went about the task of importing a special charcoal oven which cook steaks at high temperature and over charcoal. This oven works in a similar way to the ones in famous steakhouses like Shanahan’s on the Green, and ensures that each and every steak is cooked to perfection. Traditionalists might argue that it makes it too easy for the chef or whatnot, but to be honest, if you are the customer they are brilliant, as there is something very reassuring about getting the dish exactly as you requested each time.

The menu is Juju offers around eight starters, including roasted sweet potato and coriander soup, char-grilled lamb koftas, Prawns pils-pils and oak smoked Atlantic salmon. All of these are priced between €6 and €10, the prawns being the only dish to hit €10. The main courses are what you would expect from a steakhouse, heavy on the meat, but the are a couple of fish courses, sea bream and sea bass, one roased, one pan fried for those eschewing the red meat. The rest of the main courses offer steaks and chicken and prawns, but really with the charcoal oven the steaks should be destination here. The main courses are priced very fairly between €16 and €25, with all except two dishes coming in at €20 or under. The main courses are all served with potatoes and vegetable.

JuJu is offering value for money and good food. This is what the customer wants in these financially straightened times. Good service and pleasant surrounding makes this a winner.

For those curious folk among you, here is a note on the name; The Origin of Juju

Juju, a word of West African origin, refers to the supernatural power ascribed to any object used as an amulet,

charm or fetish. A witch doctor with the ability to harness juju could use this power to create awe inspiring magic. Likewise, once our trained staff place the finest cuts of Irish meat into our unique charcoal oven the results are quite simply magical.

The Heart of Juju

Our specially imported Josper charcoal oven is the beating heart of Juju. We are the first restaurant in Ireland to operate one of these unique cooking devices that allow traditional grilling at modern speeds.
